OUR  GUIDING  ELDER

Phil Hale (1).jpeg

Phil Hale was a proud member of the Diné Nation, from the Kin Łichíi’nii (Red House clan) and born for the Tódík’ǫ́zhí (Saltwater clan). He worked in the Los Angeles Native community for many decades, including as an educator, singer, facilitator, and mentor. He shared traditional teachings through singing and storytelling alongside his family’s Southern Drum group, “Hale & Company.” He was dedicated to and invested in our Native youth. He volunteered in community spaces to tutor youth with their homework, to teach traditional songs, and coach them as they participated in the annual Los Angeles Marathon. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in American Indian Studies from the University of California, Los Angeles. He reciprocated knowledge through his commitment to community. He was also an avid Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Dodgers fan. He was always there for our team and our leadership through countless projects and roles. He shared songs, opening blessings, lessons, and opportunities. He made it a point to be present. And our spaces are not the same without him here physically. He brought his heart and humor to so many relatives. We are grateful in recognizing Phil as a community leader. His legacy helps guide us to do meaningful work in community, in a good way.
